~Historic Snohomish
Founded in 1860 by E.F. Cady and E.C. Ferguson, Snohomish was once known as Cadyville.  The name was changed to Snohomish City in 1871.  The name was taken from the local Native tribe the "sdoh-doh-hohbsh", but has been disputed for decades.

Snohomish was one of the first cities in the region of the Puget Sound.  It was built on a planned military road that would connect Fort Bellingham and Fort Stellacoom by crossing the Snohomish River.  The road was never completed, but Snohomish became a local center of commerce.  In 1861, the Village of Snohomish was voted county seat after Snohomish County split from Island County.  The Village of Snohomish remained county seat until 1897, when it was relocated to the city of Everett WA, a larger neighboring community.

Snohomish got its first school in 1869.  The city was incorporated in 1890, and at the time Hyrcanus Blackman was the Police Chief and mayor.  Blackman earned a monthly salary of $20 and was paid $2 in bonus for each arrest.  1893 brought the construction of the city's first skating rink.  In 1894, Snohomish High School had its first graduation.  By 1899, the city had a population of 2,000 residents, 25 businesses and a total of 80 homes.

The first motor car was brought to Snohomish in 1901, and in 1903 the very first street was paved with brick.  The street was called First Street, and after construction there was a three day celebration.  The street was washed every week by the proud residents of Snohomish.  In 1911, a destructive fire destroyed everything between Avenues B and C.  The fire put 35 businesses out of business and destroyed over $170,000 worth of merchandise.   But the town continued to grow, despite the disaster.  By 1920 the city boasted a population of over 3,000.

First Street was redeveloped in the 1990s, taking advantage of the city's historic past as a tourist attraction.  Sidewalks were refurbished and public restrooms added.  Today, the city is model of how cities can revitalize their business districts and preserve their historic charm.  Snohomish continues to grow and has branched out to Bickford Avenue.  A wonderful mix of modern facilities and specialty shops adorn the area to serve the tourist trade.
